War and floods ruined industry, but nature rebounded, inspiring this town’s resilience. The peregrine falcon (“peregrine” meaning pilgrim or wanderer) came close to extinction by the 1970s. Thanks to the efforts of conservationists and the National Park Service, these magnificent birds also rebounded, and currently wander back to the cliffside of Maryland Heights in the spring and early summer. Family Membership for those who frequently explore the park with their children or furbabies. The Marmion family could have “skedaddled” when war came to Harpers Ferry in 1861, but Dr. Nicholas Marion, his wife Lydia, and 8 of their 14 children remained. Daughter Annie, 8 years old at the time of war, later wrote a manuscript that provided historians a valuable account of the trials faced by civilians during the war. While braving threats of starvation and bombardment, Dr. Marmion cared for civilians, soldiers, and contraband slaves. The rivers brought settlers here, kept Robert Harper here, and convinced George Washington that Harpers Ferry was “the most eligible spot on the Patowmack River” for a federal armory. The rivers brought John Brown, Lee and McClellan, and millions of visitors who seek history, knowledge, and recreation.
