Harpers Ferry Historical Association A National Park Service Coooperating Association

Stewardship Through Education

The mission of the Harpers Ferry Historical Association is "Stewardship through Education." Established in 1971, this not-for-profit association has provided over $1 million to enhance the interpretive and education programs of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and the National Park Service. The association has helped fund park public education programs, living history events, Artists-in-Residence, media for curriculum-based learning, publications, and visitor information assistance. These donations enhance the visitor experience at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park.

The Harpers Ferry Historical Association is one of 65 cooperating associations serving the National Park Service. Each year millions of people visit America's national parks, forests, wildlife refuges, and other public lands. At many of these areas, not-for-profit partner organizations, known as "cooperating" associations, enhance these visits by providing information and other visitor services. These associations provide high-quality, agency-approved publications, maps, videos, theme-related merchandise, and educational programs to help visitors understand each site's natural and cultural significance. And the purchases visitors make at a cooperating association sales outlet generate revenues that help support additional interpretation, education, and visitor service programs.

Today, there are 65 national park cooperating associations, serving nearly all of the more than 395 areas of the National Park System. [Learn more about Cooperating Associations]

Park Bookshop

The Harpers Ferry Historical Association raises funds through the sale of books and other educational materials at the Park Bookshop and at our sales outlet in the Cavalier Heights Visitor Center. The Bookshop offers over 3,000 book titles, including award-winning items published by the Association. The products we sell are designed to help the visitor better understand Harpers Ferry's rich cultural and natural heritage.

The selection of Bookshop items reflects the topics interpreted by the park: the physical and historical geography of Harpers Ferry, including the significance of waterpower; transportation in a growing nation; industry and the American system of manufacture; John Brown's Raid; the American Civil War; slavery, abolition and the education of freed blacks in the post-Civil War era.

Our Bookshop on Shenandoah Street in Lower Town Harpers Ferry is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day of the year except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year. [Learn more about our Bookshop]

The Association receives additional revenue through donations, grants, and membership.

Looking Back, Looking Ahead

The Association was established over 35 years ago by the National Park Service Interpretive Design Center at Harpers Ferry for the purpose of distributing national park films. The Association still maintains a cooperative relationship with Harpers Ferry Center, and continues to wholesale and retail National Park Service video programs. All of the Official National Park handbooks and videos are available at the Bookshop and through mail order sales. [Learn more about Harpers Ferry Center]

Future plans for the Association include additional sales outlets, new publications, and expanded educational programs, especially for young people.
